Cardiff Bach Choir's
Golden Jubilee Concert 2012

1962 - 2012

The Choir was founded by Clifford Bunford who at that time was a lecturer in the University and was a well known Welsh Tenor. The Choir was founded to promote the music of Bach and his contemporaries but over the years developed a wide repertoire of music by most major choral composers including Mozart,Vivaldi, Mendelssohn, Vaughan Williams, Schubert and Britten to name but a few. It remains a major contributor to amateur music in the city.

For many years the Choir was linked to the University Extra Mural Department, rehearsing in the University. The choir has performed regularly at Llandaff Cathedral, in St David's Hall and also Hoddinott Hall in the Wales Millennium Centre but is returning to its former home for the Jubilee Concert.

Cliff remained conductor until 2002 when he retired and handed the baton to its current conductor Dr Timothy Taylor maintaining the university connection.

The occasion of the jubilee will be marked with a concert on June 16th at the University Concert Hall, Corbett Road. The main work, not surprisingly, is one of Bach's most popular works, the Magnificat in D . The programme will also include Handel's Coronation Anthem - The King Shall Rejoice ,Vivaldi's Gloria and the Oboe Concerto in C by Cimarosa. We hope that the founder Clifford Bunford will take the baton for part of the concert.

For one family the choir has played an important part for all of its existence. The oboe soloist at theJubilee Concert will be Huw Griffiths. Huw is the son of the choirs longest serving member. His mother, Joyce Griffiths, is a founder member of the choir and her late husband, Dennis, joined a year later. Her grand-daughter and daughter-in-law now both sing with the choir.

Such is the appeal of Bach's music!
